WRITING PRACTICE



Your task:


Four writings, 130-150 words each.





1 - A report
Your local café wants to improve customers’ sensory experience to increase sales. You have been asked to write a report including the following information:
• first impressions
• other factors affecting customer enjoyment
• a recommendation on how to improve the café

2 - An opinion essay
Read the statement and write an essay giving your opinion about it: ‘Globalization of tourism is good for the world.’
Outline:
Paragraph 1: Introduction
Introduce the topic and the situation as you see it.
Paragraph 2: Justifying your opinion
Present an argument that is against your opinion and explain why you think it is mistaken.
Paragraph 3: Main argument
Present your main argument that supports your opinion.
Paragraph 4: Conclusion  
Summarize the main points and try to give the reader something to think about.

3 - A ‘for and against’ essay
Should we restrict freedom of speech on social networking sites? Write an essay giving arguments for and against the topic.
Outline:
Paragraph 1: Introduction
Give a general introduction to the topic.

Give two or three main arguments for the topic.
Paragraph 3: Arguments against the topic
Give two or three main arguments against the topic.
Paragraph 4: Conclusion
Give your own opinion, explaining why.

4 - A formal email or letter
Imagine you have just been to a music festival which you had seen advertised on a music website. You think that the advert was misleading. Write a formal letter of complaint to the ‘Magic Music Fest’ organizers at 7 Long Way, Corbette, CB2 3SX.
Outline:
Greeting: Start the letter: Include two addresses, a date and a suitable greeting.
Paragraph 1: Reason for writing: Explain why you are writing.
Paragraph 2: Your complaint: Give details of your complaint.
Paragraph 3: Next steps: Say what you want to happen next.
Sign off: Close the letter: Include a suitable ending and signature
